The surrogate court prosecutor Monica Ferrero ordered with “urgent nature” the beginning of an investigation regarding the possible impact of the political system on justice with the Penadés case, from the leak of the chats of the now former president of the Board of Directors of the Pablo Iturralde National Party.

After the scandal that shook the National Party On Thursday, in the middle of the electoral campaign, the Attorney General took action on the matter due to the possible involvement of justice in a case that, in addition, resonated strongly with citizens such as that of Gustavo Penadés.

Given Iturralde’s messages to Penadés in March 2023, when the investigation against the former white senator for crimes of abuse and exploitation of minors had just begun, which referred to the convenience of the prosecutor Alicia Ghione was appointed to lead the case – and they pointed out the possibility of putting pressure on the Court’s attorney general, Juan Gómez—; Ferrero decided to “urgently” investigate the facts.

According to the spokesperson for the Prosecutor’s Office, Javier Benech, The decision of the acting attorney general follows the request of Iturralde himself, who sent him a “note” requesting that he investigate this leak.

“Whether this has an origin in the Prosecutor’s Office or not will be clarified within the framework of this administrative investigation,” Benech explained. Ferrero entrusted this work to the Legal division of the Public ministry.

Iturralde’s request

Iturralde He requested that the accusations to which he was being subjected, after the disclosure of the chats with Penadés in the weekly Busqueda, be investigated ex officio. For example, one of those who mentioned the suspicions that this scandal raised regarding the political impact in a judicial case was the Frente Amplista candidate Yamandu Orsi.

“The news that I exercised some kind of incidence in the assignment of the prosecutor in the case of former senator Penadés is absolutely false,” said the former president of the National Party in a letter that he shared on his networks, for clarification purposes. “The facts are eloquent regarding what the Justice Department acted in a professional and independent manner, denying any false accusation based on capricious interpretations disconnected from reality,” he continued, in reference to the development of the case that today has Penadés charged with 22 sexual crimes against minors.

“That is why this morning I asked the Prosecutor’s Office to initiate a ex officio investigation with the aim of clarifying the facts so that there is no doubt about this episode,” said Iturralde. This request was the one that prosecutor Ferrero finally took to start the case.
