The jury prize went to Boris Lojkine’s social drama “The Story of Souleymane”. The feature film debut “The Village Next To Paradise” by Somali-Austrian director Mo Harawe, which was also up for an award, went home empty-handed.
This year, the award for best director is shared by Roberto Minvervini (“The Damned”) and Rungano Nyoni (“On Becoming a Guinea Fowl”). The jury, chaired by Canadian director Xavier Dolan, chose Abou Sangare (“The Story of Souleymane”) as best actor, and Anasuya Sengupta (“The Shameless”) as best actress. The young talent award went to Louise Courvoisier for “Holy Cow,” while Tawfik Alzaidi’s “Norah” received a special mention.
Prize favorite “The Village Next To Paradise” went home empty-handed
However, there was no award for “The Village Next To Paradise” by Haware, who also wrote the screenplay. In his first feature film, the director, who was born in Mogadishu in 1992 and came to Austria as a refugee at the age of 17, is now an Austrian citizen and has made a name for himself as an autodidact in the short film scene, tells the story of a family and their worries in a village in Somalia and gives an insight into the difficult, alien everyday life of this East African country.

Haware can still hope for an award, however, as he is also eligible for the Caméra d’or first film award. This will be awarded tomorrow, Saturday, on the Croisette – the same day as the awards in the main competition. However, no Austrian film is vying for the Palme d’Or here.
