Households that feed solar power into the grid are getting less and less for their energy. Most recently, as reported in the OÖN, Energie AG terminated the contracts of almost 20,000 feeders in order to pay only a fraction, namely the much lower market price. In April, this was 3.12 cents/kWh.
This is why power storage is becoming more attractive. Even the discounter Hofer has been advertising a 2.24 kWh battery storage system in addition to the popular balcony power plants since May. The set with an 800 watt panel is available for 1299 euros.

Only around a third of PV systems have storage. Of the currently around 68,000 active PV systems operated by Energie AG, 21,500 are equipped with battery storage. Two thirds use the electricity they generate themselves or feed surplus electricity into the grid (if they are allowed to).
What storage size makes sense?
That depends on the size of the photovoltaic system and the household’s consumption. A storage unit only makes sense if surplus electricity is produced. “The storage unit is best designed so that it can get through the night,” says Stephan Preishuber, master electrician in Upper Austria. If a household needs eight kWh of electricity at night, for example, he recommends a storage unit with a capacity of ten kWh.
The recommendation from Michael Schneiderbauer, whose company “Energy+” specializes in PV solutions, is “50 percent more than the typical nighttime consumption in spring or autumn.” If you want to charge an electric car, it’s best to add another ten kWh. The inverter approved for Austria, which converts direct current into alternating current, must be compatible with the storage unit. A permit is not necessary, but the electrician must register with the grid operator.
