At the time of the attack on Saturday, around 200 people were in the market, as President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Platform X. “There were dead and injured,” Zelensky wrote about the “brutal attack” by the Russian military. Mayor Ihor Terekhov spoke of six dead and 40 injured.
Video footage showed thick clouds of smoke over the hardware store premises after the attack. According to the authorities, an area of 10,000 to 15,000 square meters was in flames. The governor of the surrounding Kharkiv region, Oleh Synegubov, said that the hardware store had been hit by two guided missiles. Mayor Terekhov said: “A large number of people are missing. There are many injured.” According to the hardware store operator, around 200 people were in the building at the time of the attack, and 15 employees could not be reached.

The Russian military later claimed that the Ukrainian armed forces had hidden a weapons cache in the hardware store. “In Kharkiv, the tactic of human shields is being used – they (the Ukrainians) have set up a military camp and a command post in a shopping center, which was discovered by our intelligence service,” the state agency Tass quoted an unnamed representative of the Russian leadership as saying.
