“Aphthous ulcers are not contagious, but they are painful and often annoying because they keep recurring in some people,” says pharmacist Susanne Sokoll-Seebacher from the Pinsdorf pharmacy.
Children with braces in particular are often affected by canker sores, for example when food particles get caught in the braces or become stuck in injured mucous membranes. “Consistent oral and dental hygiene is recommended as a preventative measure,” says Sokoll-Seebacher.
If a canker sore has already developed, the expert advises using a soft toothbrush so as not to further irritate the painful area in the mouth. Sage-myrrh mouthwash speeds up healing. “To do this, add ten drops of the tincture to half a glass of water and rinse your mouth with it.” Rinses with sage or mallow tea are also helpful. Special gels that can be dabbed directly onto the canker sore with a cotton swab have a pain-relieving effect. For children, Sokoll-Seebacher recommends a hydrolate made from sage and chamomile that can be sprayed on: “It tastes pleasant and is therefore popular with children.” It can take two weeks for a canker sore to heal completely.
