“It is estimated that 150 houses are now buried and 670 people are estimated to be dead,” said Serhan Aktoprak from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) office in Port Moresby on Sunday. The disaster occurred early Friday morning in a remote area of the island state in Oceania.

According to Aktoprak, the rescue operation in Enga province in the highlands of Papua New Guinea is proving extremely difficult. “The situation is terrible, the ground is still slipping,” said the representative of the UN migration organization. “The water is running and that creates a massive risk for everyone involved.” People are using “sticks, spades and large forks” to dig up the bodies, Aktoprak explained.
Papua New Guinea is located in the southwestern Pacific and is frequently hit by heavy rain. This year there have already been intense rains and floods. In March, at least 23 people were killed in a landslide in a nearby province.
