“I’m overwhelmed. First World Cup and a medal straight away – that’s really unbelievable,” the Vöcklabruck native couldn’t believe it.

In Varna, Schmölzer had just made it into the final in eighth place – he was tied with the ninth-placed Kazakh Assan Salimov. In this final, he managed a significant improvement with 13,750 points. Only the Ukrainian Nazar Chepurnyi (14,383) and the Frenchman Nicolas Diez (14,100) were ahead of him. “That was just wow,” said Schmölzer, who was coached by national coach Michal Zoha.

“This is a really great thing, Paul did both jumps in the final excellently, with perfect technique and very good landings,” said Zoha, who was delighted with a second exceptional performance from his protégés just under a month after Vincent Lindpointner’s Junior European Championship bronze.

Schmölzer had already demonstrated his abilities at the European Championships by finishing 15th on his special apparatus.
