He Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), Fernando Mattosspoke at the 91st Annual General Session of the Assembly of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA)which takes place in Paris between May 26 and 30, and warned that science should not be the excuse for “protectionist actions” by nations.
When speaking at the opening ceremony before more than 1,300 delegates from 183 countries, the head of the MGAP highlighted the importance of the correct use of scientific data in the current global commercial scenario.
In that sense, Mattos highlighted the importance of the OMSA regarding the “determination of the rules”, but pointed out that there is “an enormous challenge going forward” regarding what the organization will have to do.
“We have a growing population, a growing demand, a food safety which increasingly has a more predominant scenario in the political decisions of the countries, because food security is also political and democratic stability,” the leader continued.
Likewise, he expressed that food security also translates into “stability of government regimes”, regardless of their tendency. “Clearly, we have a growing threat to food security due to the incidence of emerging and transboundary diseases,” she said.
“People move more, goods are exchanged more and, therefore, the transmission of infectious-contagious diseases is the order of the day, hand in hand with climate change that affects this behavior and really challenges us towards forward,” Mattos said.
The agenda of the MGAP delegation in France and Southeast Asia
The MGAP delegation is in France to participate in the election of the new president of the OMSA, in support of the candidacy of the Argentinian Luis Barcosand is made up of the director of the General Directorate of Livestock Services (DGSG), Diego de Freitas; the director of Animal Health, Martin Altuna; he Ambassador of Uruguay in France, Jorge Jure; Hebert Trenchi and Joaquin Fernandez of the Latin American Poultry Association; Jorge Bonino and Victoria Hiriart.
Subsequently, the official mission of the government portfolio will move to Southeast Asia to seek the opening of new markets in China, Malaysia and Indonesiaand will return to the country on June 7.
