Marcel Ziegl sacrificed himself for SV Ried for more than 15 years, fighting his way back after some serious injuries. The price he has to pay is high: he ended his career at the age of 31. On the field, he was always someone who tried to lead the way and get his teammates involved. Even after the relegations, he remained loyal to SV Ried, which he repeatedly described in interviews as his “heart’s club”. In the past, Ziegl has experienced (almost) all of SVR’s ups and downs.
Now, after the farewell on Saturday, the club should take action to ensure that the “veteran” remains a face of the second division team, although both sides are obviously needed for such cooperation. There is talk of a “major project” in the region that Ziegl is to drive forward. The loss of another identification figure would be bitter for SV Ried. The intelligent footballer’s word carries weight in Ried, and Ziegl would be an authentic ambassador for the club off the pitch as well.
