US diplomats to go to Beijing Olympics to support athletes

US diplomats will travel to Beijing to support American athletes participating in the Olympics, the administration of US President Joe Biden said. The New York Post wrote about this on December 27.

China’s Foreign Ministry on Monday announced 18 applications for diplomatic visas from the United States. According to the South China Morning Post, 40 more statements are expected ahead of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on February 4.

The US State Department and the White House National Security Council said on Monday that there had been no change in the “diplomatic boycott” that Joe Biden had announced earlier.

“We intend to provide consular and diplomatic protection services to ensure the safety of our athletes, coaches, instructors and personnel and access to the services we provide to all US citizens overseas. Any visa application will be addressed to these consular and diplomatic security personnel. The presence of such personnel in the field is the norm, and these personnel are not official or diplomatic representation at the Games, ”the two departments said in a statement.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said earlier that the US diplomatic visa request showed that Biden’s announced boycott was a “farce.”

“The American side recently staged a farce for the purpose of political manipulation and announced that it would not send any diplomatic or official representatives to the Beijing Winter Olympics, although in fact they were not invited. We again call on the American side to practice the Olympic spirit, stop politicizing sports, and stop further comments or actions that could hinder or disrupt the Beijing Winter Olympics, ”Zhao said.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki announced the US decision to stage a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics on December 6. It was noted that this step will not affect the participation of American athletes in the Games. The reason for the decision in Washington was called “the genocide in Xinjiang and other violations of human rights.”

The International Olympic Committee on December 7 noted that they respect the decision of the United States. The representative of the organization noted that the presence or absence of government officials and diplomats at the Games is a personal decision of each government.

China, in response to the US attack, made a strong show and promised to take drastic action in response to Washington’s diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The Chinese Embassy in Washington on this day called Washington’s demarche “political manipulation.”

The XXIV Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing from 4 to 20 February 2022. The capital of the PRC was chosen as the venue at the session of the International Olympic Committee in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015.
