Tourism: Upper Austria wants to move away from “thinking in seasons”

When it comes to family holidays, Upper Austria still has potential for improvement.

2023 was a record year for Upper Austria’s tourism: With 3.25 million guests and 8.65 million overnight stays, the previous records from the pre-Corona year of 2019 were broken between November 2022 and October 2023. The winter season was also satisfactory: 1.22 million arrivals and 3.2 million overnight stays were recorded (for comparison: in Salzburg there were 15.6 million overnight stays).

“We want to take this momentum into the coming summer,” said State Tourism Minister Markus Achleitner today, Monday, at a preview in Linz. The outlook is positive, the booking situation is satisfactory. Destinations on lakes and in the mountains are particularly in demand.

As reported, Upper Austria has adopted a new tourism strategy: more visibility on the international stage and more efficiency in the organization are cornerstones. In addition, the aim is to move away from “thinking in seasons” and towards year-round tourism: “Upper Austria is worth a trip every week,” said Achleitner.

A new campaign by Upper Austria Tourism also follows this line, underlining the renaissance of summer holidays: “In the 19th century, as today, summer holidays represent a time to regain strength, unwind and be active,” said managing director Andreas Winkelhofer. Upper Austria offers nature, cuisine, culture, sport and exercise, all year round. Surveys of holidaymakers show that natural landscapes are the deciding factor for more than a third of holidaymakers: “But city tourism, especially in Linz, is also developing well, partly due to the numerous events.” Upper Austria is also a place where work and leisure can be combined (“workation”). Winkelhofer sees potential for growth in family holidays.

“Something for every wallet”

According to Robert Seeber, chairman of the Federal Tourism Division of the Chamber of Commerce, demand is shifting: on the one hand, there is an increasing demand for quality, while on the other hand, demand for cheaper offers, such as holiday apartments and camping, is increasing: “There is something for every wallet.”

There are 7,100 restaurants and hotels in Upper Austria, employing 21,100 people. The need for workers is great. “Chefs and restaurant managers are particularly urgently needed,” said the new chairman of the tourism division in Upper Austria, Gerold Royda. Training must continue to be improved and young people must be inspired to work in tourism.
