The attacker opened fire first in Denver, where he killed two women and a man, and left another wounded.
He then went to Lakewood, where he killed one man and wounded another.
With the information from the first attack, Lakewood agents were able to identify the individual.
A shootout began between the officers and the attacker in which “the shooter was killed,” Lakewood police spokesman John Romero said, adding that the gunman was “pronounced dead at the scene.”
In the exchange of gunfire, a police officer was injured.
The “officer is undergoing surgery at the hospital,” Romero said, the AFP news agency reported.
The motives that led the man to carry out the attack are unknown.
