Insufficient thermals forced a 65-year-old pilot from Steyr to make an off-field landing in the municipality of Nussdorf am Attersee (Vöcklabruck district) on Monday morning. The man had set off from a private airfield in Micheldorf (Kirchdorf an der Krems district) at around 11:30 a.m. for a cross-country flight to the Salzkammergut. However, he and his 68-year-old passenger, who also had a pilot’s license, must have misjudged the conditions. After a good hour and a half, the men realized that they would not be able to get back to the airfield due to insufficient thermals.
The pilot decided to make a planned landing in a field in the municipality of Nussdorf am Attersee, where he was able to bring his glider safely to the ground. The plane turned 110 degrees after landing and apparently remained undamaged. Both passengers survived the incident unharmed. Only the ears of wheat in the field were damaged, the police said. The landowner was notified. The pilot then arranged for his plane to be transported away.
