Unemployment in Brazil fell to 12.1% between August and October

“The increase in the number of employed persons was registered in six of the ten activity groups, such as commerce, industry and accommodation and food services”, said Adriana Beringuy, Coordinator of Work and Performance at IBGE.

Although it fell, unemployment continues to affect 12.9 million people in this country of 213 million people and inflation continues to erode family incomes.

The return on workers’ wages “has been decreasing, either because the expansion of work occurs in lower-income occupations, or because of the increase in inflation in recent months,” Beringuy explained.

The 12-month increase in consumer prices was 10.74% until November, a maximum since the same month in 2003.

More than 38 million Brazilians work in the informal sector, equivalent to more than 40% of the workforce, according to IBGE.

According to the United Nations (UN), almost a quarter of Brazilians are in a situation of food insecurity.

The Brazilian economy entered a recession after registering a 0.1% decline in GDP in the third quarter of 2021, the second in a row with a negative result, impacted by the decline in agricultural activity.

The market’s expectation is that the country will register an economic expansion of 4.51% this year and 0.42% in 2022, according to the latest Focus survey from the Central Bank.

In 2020, when the pandemic hit the economy squarely, Brazilian GDP fell 4.1%.
