From the end of July, up to 60 people will be able to surf on the facility’s artificially generated waves at the same time. “What we can offer here is perfect conditions at the touch of a button,” said managing director Chris Boehm-Tettelbach on Tuesday. More than 40 million euros have been invested in the project so far.
20,000 square meters
The area is around 20,000 square meters, which is almost the size of three football fields. Both beginners and professionals should be able to surf here. The German Surfing Association plans to use the surf park for official competitions and as a training area. At the presentation on Tuesday, the two professional surfers Camilla Kemp and Tim Elter, who have qualified for the 2024 Olympics, tested the first waves. It is a “wonderful technology and something completely revolutionary for Germany,” said Elter.
Continuous waves
In the 180-meter-long pool, surfers can catch one of the continuous waves every ten seconds. This distinguishes the surf park from standing waves that can be found in other artificial facilities or in rivers, for example. According to the operators of the surf park, the experience is more comparable to surfing in the sea.
