Scandal in Brazil for the election of an authority of a deliberative council for its beauty

Roloff had no intention of even running for office, but was forced by his own opponents, in a session with characteristics of “pago chico”, many taking “chimarrao”, the classic mate of the “gaúchos”, as they say to los Brazilians from Rio Grande do Sul.

In the session, three councilors from right-wing parties voted for the leader of the PT under the argument that Roloff “should beautify politics and the Deliberative Council”, in addition to being the only woman and, at 24 years old, the youngest in the local legislative.

“Emotionally I am very affected. It was not a lack of respect to me, but to all women. I am still digesting and finding strength to continue with my forehead high but it did me very bad. I cannot get down because there are many people who trust me work, “said the councilor of the party founded by the former president and favorite to regain the government Luiz Inácio Lula da SIlva.

Roloff is not only the only woman and the youngest person in the body, but she is the only representative of a left-wing party in the municipality.

“It is not a beauty contest, I am there to work for the municipality”said the councilor, who does not intend to take legal action against her colleagues.

Roloff had disputed the presidency of the Deliberative Council in a minority last Wednesday but was overtaken by the right-wing Marcelo Maron, of the Brazilian Labor Party, one of the support bases of Bolsonarism at the national level and the banner of the self-styled “green-and-yellow libertarians.”

But to decide the other authorities, the leader of the also Bolsonar Progressive Party (PP), Francisco Vilela, argued that his party historically “votes for the ladies” and proposed the only councilor as second vice president of the directing table.

Arion Braga, also from the PP, seconded him: he stated that politics had to be “beautified” and give a “feminine touch.”

Two other councilors agreed with him: Oraci Teixeira, of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), which in Rio Grande do Sul is in alliance with the conservatives, and Silvio Neutzling, of the Brazilian Democracy Movement of former President Michel Temer.

Braga said she did not want to offend anyone or disrespect the councilor. “I was saddened by how everything turned out in the end,” he told the local press.

According to the video of the session, the PT councilor was offended at that moment and asked them: “Please, when you vote for me, do it for my intellectual capacity and not for my beauty.”

She was defended by a PP conservative, Carlos Martins, who accused his male colleagues of “having done a clown, leaving the rival in a position of disrespect.”

In addition, he told his co-religionists that they lacked “character”, a phrase that in Brazil is very offensive and that generated a 30-minute discussion, completely filmed by the official paralmentary television of the municipality of Canguçú.
