Invited by the Association of Marketing Managers (ADM) to a working breakfast, the mayor of Montevideo and presidential candidate for the Broad Front (FA), Carolina Cossepresented at the event its proposals to reduce inequality, counteract social violence, as well as concrete measures in the areas of security and the environment.
“In the decade from 2005 to 2015 there was sustained growth in economy and a decrease in inequality, which is the perfect combination, for the country to grow, but for inequality to decrease, that is, for it to be distributed a little better,” he said cosse this Wednesday before a select audience of businessmen.
“What is happening now is that the country is growing, at a certain low rate, that is a challenge we have ahead, and inequality is also growing, the two go together, and we have to reverse that,” continued the pre-candidate. of the FA and added: “The problem of inequality is not only for the most fragile, it is a problem for the entire society, because inequality generates chronic social tension.”
“We consider that there is a virtuous circle between growth and equality that has been broken,” commented the capital’s leader, who maintains that “if one has that 44% of children from 0 to 6 years old are born in the 20% of the poorest homes “, there is “a structural social problem of inequality.”
Along these lines, the Fentamplista candidate focused her speech on public safety, with several criticisms of the government. “There is a high level of violence in society And I’m not just talking about homicides, which are increasing, I’m talking about a level of social violence. For example, yesterday I was talking with a group of older adults about this advance of violence. “There is an enormous amount of violence in society, in our society, among human beings,” she remarked.
“When you are at work you start arguing with someone and you get passionate, or when you are in the neighborhood, you start arguing with someone, about the ball, about the garden, about the noise, and you get passionate. That’s life. of society. When we reach these situations (of violence), the family is forgotten, it happens in the workplace, in the nation. These situations are not going to be of any use to us,” he reflected.
The pre-candidate also focused on the country’s prison situation, which she believes “does not resolve violence,” but rather “exacerbates it,” in a context that has “an overcrowded prison system with a 70% recidivism rate.” Regarding the plan developed by her team regarding security, she defined it as “a strategy that goes beyond people.”
On the other hand, he exemplified that one of the aspects that will be sought is to improve coexistence. In that sense, cosse presented some numbers, such as those linked people in street situationswhom he quantified at 2,800 (quadruple that of 2006), the number of homicidesgoing from about 200 annually in 2000 to 350 today, and the worrying figure of 800 suicides annually, among others.

At the same time, the pre-candidate also referred to the problem of drug trafficking as another of his concerns. “This is a market that handles a huge amount of money. I think we have to dismantle that market and one of the ways is to control how they launder the money,” she said.
cosse He also placed the issue of environmental protection as one of the central themes in his speech: “The environment is not a key to development, it is a necessity of development, because if a certain kindness and concern is not taken into account, with the environment, competitiveness is lost in the production of products,” said the engineer.
“What train are you talking about?”
The mayor of Montevideo on leave was consulted during the event about the initiative of Train-Tram (tram) for the metropolitan area, proposed by the company Sacem, which is waiting to obtain international financing.
“What train are you talking about, has it been presented to the mayor’s office? No, no,” he said. cosse looking at your investment advisor, the former undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Pablo Ferreri.
“We did present a project,” he continued before adding: “I am struck by the enormous amount of marketing around something that is not even a project presented to the Montevideo Municipality, when we have ours, which is concrete, which is published, and we present the way to finance it. We were careful not to have an impact on the fiscal aspect, which included two corridors such as Avenida 8 de Octubre and Avenida Italia. Why isn’t that talked about?” he asked.
