Wrong turn: 41-year-old exhausted rescued from via ferrata

Shortly after midday, the man from Graz started his mountain tour from a car park in Hallstatt. He reached the exit at around 4 p.m. via the Seewand via ferrata, which is marked with difficulty level D/E (“very difficult” to “extremely difficult”).

The man had read about the via ferrata on the Internet, but according to the police he had not thought about the way back. The descent leads from the exit of the via ferrata towards Gjaidalm and then by cable car or over the ski slope into the valley. This path leads away from the car park. This must have irritated the 41-year-old so much that he took a wrong turn and ended up in pathless terrain. Finally, he found himself exhausted in front of a rock face and could not go any further.

At around 8 p.m. the man called the rescue services. At the last light of day he was rescued by the crew of the air police helicopter and brought to the valley.
