“The reception of the testimonial statement of President Pedro Castillo Terrones will be in charge of the Supreme Deputy Prosecutor, Ramiro González,” indicates a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office.
The president of Peru gives his testimony at the headquarters of the Executive, in the Government Palace.
The prosecutor of the Nation, Zoraída Ávalos, who was going to take the statement, does not participate, after being admitted to a clinic for health problems.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the objective is to receive the testimonial statement from the president, since Castillo does not appear as being investigated in the case that is still in the preliminary investigation phase.
The entity opened the case on November 11 against the then Defense Ministers, Walter Ayala, and Secretary of the Presidency, Bruno Pacheco, alleging alleged pressure on Army and Air Force chiefs to favor some officers in the annual promotion process.
Both officials resigned and are now being investigated to determine whether they incurred in “the alleged commission of the crimes of abuse of authority and illegal sponsorship, foreseen and sanctioned in the Penal Code,” according to a document from the Prosecutor’s Office.
The case became known when Castillo surprisingly removed the chief of the Army, General José Vizcarra, and the chief of the Air Force, General Jorge Chaparro, at the beginning of November.
The two generals affirmed that their departures were due to friction with Ayala and Pacheco, who asked them to irregularly promote officials related to the government.
Both military chiefs had been appointed by Castillo in August. The promotions allegedly promoted by government officials did not materialize.
Castillo, in power since July 28, narrowly defeated right-wing Keiko Fujimori in the ballot box. His term ends in 2026.
