December turned out to be one degree too mild and despite sufficient rainfall, the snow yield was again significantly too low. Only up to the 11th was there a hint of winter in the form of snow, which reached its peak on the 9th with up to ten centimeters. This is the balance sheet from Christian Brandstätter from the Meteo-data weather station Seewalchen.
From the 12th a pronounced mild phase began again, so that the snowy landscape soon had to give way to a dreary gray. The sun was pretty rare in December, as in many places only 75 percent of the usual sunshine duration was recorded.
Shortly before Christmas there were night frosts down to minus ten degrees and wonderful frosty landscapes, but punctually on the 23rd, mild Atlantic air flooded our country with rain. Regionally, there was massive black ice formation, as the warming first took place in higher air layers and was only able to prevail on the ground after a time lag. Thus the holidays were cloudy, gray and mild and reminded of dreary November days, so that the Christmas thaw lived up to its name again.
