Asylum accommodation of the Red Cross will be closed at the end of February

The parish and parish in Naarn have a long tradition of helping refugees. Even after the war in Yugoslavia, people found refuge and protection here. During the refugee movement six years ago, Naarn also stepped in as a provider of accommodation: lightweight houses with space for a total of 48 people were set up in the parish garden. Since then, under the care of the Red Cross, a little more than 200 asylum seekers from 20 different nations have found protection and the opportunity to arrive in a country that is foreign to them.

With the sharp decline in asylum applications in recent years, accommodation in Naarn is no longer needed. The facility is to be cleared by the end of February. The 38 residents who were last living here will be accommodated in new housing options until then.

For the Red Cross Perg this closes a chapter of excellent cooperation with the local stakeholders, says district manager Christian Geirhofer: “Not only did the parish make the building site available for a symbolic rent, but also the constant new residents Residents have been greatly supported by the population all these years. “

Some situations were quite challenging. But locals always followed the guiding principle of the Red Cross “For the love of people” and tried to support the residents on their way to a new life.

When it came down to it, teams were formed that took on various tasks such as language courses, driving services, leisure activities and the collection of everyday things for the asylum seekers. For Elfriede Reindl, coordinator of the social services of the Rotkreuz district office in Perg, the strong support of the parish council and parish council was an important factor in the success of the Naarner asylum seeker care.
