As the police reported on Saturday afternoon, he was wearing summer clothing and got stuck in the fresh snow during the night. In the morning he wanted to set off from Mayrhofen on a marked mountain bike route towards the “Pfitscher Joch” and South Tyrol.
Nighttime operation
After some time, he came across terrain where winter conditions prevailed. Late at night, it was already 2:30 a.m., he finally made an emergency call after he got stuck due to the increasing snowfall and ultimately due to exhaustion. According to police, the Chinese cyclist was about 200 meters below the mountain pass.
Hypothermic but uninjured
The emergency call alerted the Ginzling mountain rescue service, but because it was easier to reach him via a road, the operation was handed over to the South Tyrolean colleagues from the Sterzing mountain rescue service. They were able to rescue him at around 4:30 a.m. at an altitude of 2,200 meters, suffering from hypothermia but otherwise unharmed, and bring him to accommodation.
