There are some things that you have to achieve first – like making a crime thriller that contains the following, but still trickles along like an idyllic brook: a bloody murder (complete with a close-up of a pitchfork), a conspiracy theory about a Saudi prince, a suspect galloping away on a horse and a doping scandal involving top racehorses.
In the new episode “Where is Belle Helene?” of the German-Danish series “Dan Sommerdahl” (today, 10:15 p.m., ZDF), which is loosely based on the books of the Scandinavian author Anna Grue, this experiment in anti-suspense worked brilliantly.
At its core, it is about the murder of horse owner Eric Windfeldt and the disappearance of his most valuable animal, the mare Belle Helene. It is therefore a double case that haunts the Danish title character Dan (played by Peter Mygind), framed in the classic way by a semi-private subplot (Is the lady of his heart perhaps a criminal?). “Dan Sommerdahl” presents itself as the crime thriller equivalent of “Dream Ship” – beautiful landscape, sea and nothing that hurts too much.
Ideal for anyone who really wants to take a break from “Tatort” during the summer break. Because the only thing that could upset you here is the bloodless predictability.
