Innviertler Cup: A highlight for the referees too

The organizing committee of the Innviertler Cup presented the winner’s trophy.

The traditional tournament is taking place for the 33rd time this year and is taking place under special circumstances: The Innviertel Football Cup is being held this year in memory of long-time committee member and OÖN editor Josef Schuldenzucker, who died last year. The defending champions are the UFC PTA (Peterskirchen/Tumeltsham/Andrichsfurt). The Innviertel football clubs’ excitement about the upcoming competition was evident last Wednesday during the draw for the first round, which took place in the Geinberg thermal baths. Due to the large number of people attending, the event hall had to be equipped with additional tables and chairs so that everyone could find space. “It’s nice to see that all participating clubs have sent a delegation. That shows us how important the cup is for the clubs,” says Reinhold Klika from the organizing committee.

Exciting duels

The draw was made by Bundesliga referee Stefan Ebner and Gerlinde Detzlhofer, partner of Josef Schuldenzucker. Some interesting pairings were drawn. In the North group there will be two derbies: SV Freinberg will host Union Schardenberg, Union Diersbach will host SPG Sigharting/Andorf. In the South group there will be a neighborhood duel between SV Mining-Mühlheim and SK Altheim, the record winner of the Innviertler Cup. All pairings can be found online at www.innviertlercup.at.

After the draw, there was an interview with referee Stefan Ebner. He talked about his career and his work as a Bundesliga and FIFA referee. During the interview, Ebner also explained the importance of the cup for the referees. “For the referees, the Innviertler Cup is an absolute highlight and a great opportunity to prepare for the coming season under competitive conditions. Each of them wants to present themselves in the best possible way in order to have the chance to referee the final,” says Ebner.

At the end of the event, the officials present were surprised by a short visit from a delegation of the women’s national football team, who were preparing in Geinberg for yesterday’s match against Iceland (which took place after the editorial deadline).
