Torrential rains caused small-scale flooding in Upper Austria on Monday afternoon and required the deployment of numerous fire brigades. It was shortly before 2 p.m. when the first storm alarm of the day was received by the state fire brigade command: an underpass in Leonding (Linz-Land district) had been flooded. Numerous other alarms followed every minute. The state warning center has increased its staff in order to be prepared for a potentially high number of emergency calls.
Flooded basements and streets
Within one and a half hours, Upper Austria’s fire brigades were called out to more than 60 operations – and the number is increasing. The main task was to pump out flooded cellars, clear or close flooded roads and clear blockages. The heavy rainfall in some areas also caused smaller streams, which were already carrying a lot of water after the rainfall of the past few days, to overflow their banks. There were also isolated traffic accidents.
