The man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of preparing further bankruptcies, the Lower Austria State Police Directorate reported on Tuesday. He refused to give a statement. The investigation is focusing on a network of companies based in Wiener Neudorf (Mödling district).
The accused is said to have used a complex system of fictitious managing directors, fictitious sales of company shares and fictitious invoices to evade responsibility, the police said. The 56-year-old is said to have issued employment contracts with a net salary of 2,500 euros, but only paid the employees a fraction of the wages.
The entrepreneur is also accused of not paying taxes to the Austrian Health Insurance Fund and the Construction Workers’ Holiday and Severance Pay Fund and of generally not registering employees. Sales tax is also said to have been evaded by issuing fictitious invoices to fictitious companies and by incurring costs for companies that were on the verge of bankruptcy. The accused is also said to have diverted company funds.
The 56-year-old was arrested on Monday at around 6 a.m., not least because of the establishment of new companies and possible further bankruptcies. The accused was taken to the Wiener Neustadt prison.
