No food, no water, massive contamination in the stables, emaciated animals, some with ingrown chains: Horrific conditions must have prevailed on a farm near Lake Attersee. A total of 105 cattle eked out a miserable existence in the two stables in the Vöcklabruck district. The serious deficiencies were discovered during several inspections by the authorities and the official veterinarian at the end of May.

Evacuation ordered

On May 31, the Vöcklabruck district authority ordered the removal of all animals and the immediate evacuation of the farm. The police had to be called in because the 58-year-old farmer was extremely uncooperative. According to the police, 94 cattle had to be slaughtered, ten of them on the spot due to their pitiful condition.

The rest of the cattle, including calves, were housed with farmers in the area. The accused has not yet commented on the allegations. He will be reported to both the Vöcklabruck district authority and the Wels public prosecutor’s office for animal cruelty, the police announced on Tuesday evening.
