The 81-year-old Democratic president ordered new restrictions on the entry of migrants in order to “secure” the border between the United States and Mexico.
“UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is very concerned about the new measures of asylum announced today by the United States, which They impose harsh restrictions on the right to request asylum in the country,” the entity declared in a statement.
“The new measures will deny access to asylum to many people who need international protection and who will now be without a viable option to seek safety,” he added.
“Any person who claims to have well-founded fears of being persecuted in their country of origin must have access to safe territory” and has the right to “this allegation is evaluated before being subject to deportation or expulsion”continued the UN agency.
“We ask United States to fulfill its international obligations and we urge the government to reconsider the restrictions that undermine the fundamental right to seek asylum,” he said in the statement.

With this drastic measure, Biden tries to address one of his great weaknesses in his battle for re-election against his rival, the Republican Donald Trump.
