Death toll from floods in northeast Brazil rises to 21

A 19-year-old young man drowned while trying to cross a current last Monday in the city of Ilheus, one of the best known Bahian tourist centers, reported Civil Defense.

According to the latest report from that body, released on Tuesday night, there are 136 cities in emergency situation, which represents 30% of the Bahian municipalities.

Ilheus, with its beautiful beaches on the Atlantic coast, is located in the southeast of the state of Bahia where the number of displaced people rose to 77,000, said Civil Defense and the total number of people affected exceeds 470,000.

The Fire Brigade reported on the risk of new floods caused by the water flow released in the Aguas Vermelhas dam located in the neighboring state of Minas Gerais, where there were also heavy rains.

The waters coming from Minas Gerais can flood the Bahian cities of Itambé, Canasvieiras, Mascote and Cándido Sales.

Two dams, in the towns of Iguá and Jussiape, collapsed last weekend.

The states of São Paulo, Maranhao, Brasilia and Ceará announced the dispatch of firefighters to collaborate with the rescue tasks.
