Couple in New York found 0,000 in a pond

The couple hopes to be able to turn the find into cash.

Barbara Agostini and James Kane found the damaged and soaked bills in a rusty and muddy safe. “It was unreal,” said Agostini, “I thought it was a joke at first.” The two metal anglers have often found safes in ponds, lakes and other bodies of water in New York, but never one with such contents.

Advanced decay

Kane couldn’t believe his eyes when he discovered bundles of banknotes held together by rubber bands. The first pictures and videos of the find were published on online services and in local media. The two took their find to the New York Police Department (NYPD) so as not to “get into trouble”. A police spokesman confirmed that in principle every find of money “worth ten dollars or more must be reported to the police”. However, due to the advanced deterioration of the money, the authenticity and value of the notes could not be conclusively determined.

The couple now wants to take their find to the Treasury Department in Washington so that they can turn it into cash. US law stipulates that badly damaged banknotes are replaced as long as they cannot be linked to a crime.
