Federal road over Pass Lueg in Salzburg closed after rockfall

Rockfall on the B159 Salzachtal road: Several boulders fell in a southerly direction shortly after Golling.

An inspection of the demolition site today revealed that loose rock and wood still need to be removed before the danger is averted and the road can be reopened, the state of Salzburg announced on Wednesday afternoon. However, it is possible that the road will be reopened later this week.

Four cars damaged

Early on Tuesday evening, around 20 cubic metres of rock and stone came loose and slid down. A safety net caught most of the rubble, but one or two cubic metres fell onto the road and damaged four cars. The occupants were uninjured, according to information from the Hallein district authority.

“Unfortunately, the critical area above the destroyed protective fence is more massive than expected. The road maintenance staff need support from a helicopter to remove the loose rock and wood,” said state geologist Rainer Braunstingl. According to his assessment, the road could still be opened this week.

Alternative route for A10

The Salzachtal federal road is one of the few north-south connections in or through the state of Salzburg. It runs more or less parallel to the Tauern motorway (A10) and serves as an alternative route when the latter is closed. Five motorway tunnels are currently being renovated in this section, which is why there is only one lane available in each direction and the federal road is more heavily used.
