Expansion of footpaths and cycle paths is being pushed forward

The pedestrian and cycle path between Mörschwang and Reichersberg was opened on Wednesday, May 29th.

It is no secret that cycling has become more popular in recent years. The introduction of e-bikes in particular has led to a rapid increase in the number of cyclists. To ensure that cyclists can travel safely and do not have to ride on busy federal roads, the pedestrian and cycle network in Upper Austria is being continuously expanded. More and more new protected paths are also being created in the Innviertel region. Much to the delight of the State Councilor for Infrastructure, Günther Steinkellner (FPÖ).

“Cycling has become a mainstream part of society. To ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians, we must push ahead with the expansion of footpaths and cycle paths as quickly as possible,” said Steinkellner at the opening of the cycle path on the L1109 Mörschwanger Straße between Mörschwang and Reichersberg last Wednesday. The newly constructed footpath and cycle path is 1.1 kilometers long and three meters wide. This route connects seamlessly with the R3 Inntal cycle path, creating an additional circular route for non-motorized private transport. The total cost of the project is 270,000 euros. The state’s share is 135,000 euros. The municipality of Reichersberg invested 100,000 euros and the municipality of Mörschwang 35,000 euros.

Current projects

A new protected path for cyclists and walkers is currently being built along the Lower Innviertel state road between Taiskirchen and Riedau. The official opening of the 3.3-kilometer-long pedestrian and cycle path is scheduled for July.

A pedestrian and cycle path is currently being built between the communities of Mettmach and Aspach. Once construction is complete, the new pedestrian path will lead from the town center of Mettmach directly to the center of Aspach. Completion is scheduled for 2025.

Projects in planning

Further projects planned by the state of Upper Austria in the Ried district include the construction of a pedestrian and cycle path along the L1067 Lohnsburger Straße between Lohnsburg and Waldzell (construction to begin in 2025) and along the L1075 Geiersberger Straße between Geiersberg and St. Marienkirchen bei Hausruck (project currently in planning).

The expansion of the walking and cycling network is particularly important for the Innviertel tourist region, as National Councillor Manfred Hofinger (ÖVP) explained during the celebrations in Reichersberg. “Cycling tourism has been experiencing an upswing for several years. We want to use this to strengthen the Innviertel as a tourist region even more and to attract more guests. A well-developed walking and cycling network is very useful in this regard,” said Hofinger.
