Hope for mRNA vaccine against skin cancer

If detected early, melanomas are usually curable.

The launch of the world’s first mRNA vaccine against cancer is getting closer. The US pharmaceutical company Moderna presented promising study results at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s cancer congress in Chicago. The mRNA vaccine is to be used in combination with an immunotherapeutic agent against a malignant form of skin cancer: high-risk melanoma. This is intended to prevent the treated skin cancer from returning or those affected from dying from it. Even several years after the drug has been administered, there are hardly any relapses. It is “reasonable to assume that these people could never actually suffer a relapse,” Moderna President Stephen Hoge told the German “Spiegel”. Approval for the USA and the EU is expected in 2025.
