LASK had definitely assumed that there would be two participants in the European Championship – after Tobias Lawal was unexpectedly sent on summer vacation by ÖFB team boss Ralf Rangnick, only one athlete, Maksym Talowjerow, will be on the ball at the finals in Germany.
In Ukraine’s penultimate European Championship test, the 23-year-old played the full 1:3 defeat against Poland in Warsaw. Poland quickly took a 2:0 lead thanks to goals from Sebastian Walukiewicz of Empoli (11th) and Naples legionnaire Piotr Zielinski (16th). Taras Romanczuk (30th) added another goal before the break, and Artem Dowbyk (41st) brought Ukraine a little closer.
In the second half, the game was no longer fluid due to various substitutions on both sides. Poland’s top star Robert Lewandowski was substituted in the 61st minute and missed a good opportunity in the 88th minute. Shortly before that, Talowjerow had been shown a yellow card.
On Tuesday, Ukraine’s dress rehearsal for the European Championship will take place against Moldova. The opponents in the final round will be Belgium, Slovakia and Romania.
