As part of a local inspection in Schwertberg, he was present at targeted checks on drug drivers on the road. Such checks are carried out several times a month in all Upper Austrian districts.
“The police specialists for identifying drug drivers make an important contribution to road safety. Drivers impaired by drugs must be taken off the road,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner on the sidelines of the targeted checks in Schwertberg.
90 specialists for Upper Austria
In recent years, the Federal Police Directorate and the State Police Directorate of Upper Austria have increasingly trained specialists in drug detection. In Upper Austria, there are almost 90 specialists available, divided between all districts. At least one drug pre-test device is also in use in every district. In addition, a pool of more than 20 police contract doctors can be used.
8,700 reports against drug drivers in 2023
The number of reports against drug drivers has increased continuously in recent years. This is mainly due to the increased number of drug detection specialists at the Upper Austrian police. In 2019, more than 4,300 reports were filed, and in 2023, almost 8,700 reports were filed. This is more than a doubling of the number of reports in the comparable five-year period (from 2019 to 2023).
