EPP remains in first place across Europe – right-wing parties also gain ground

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was the lead candidate of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the EU elections.

The trend forecast of the EU Parliament for the European elections on Sunday evening clearly put the European People’s Party (EPP) in first place in Parliament: It will have 186 mandates and thus gain seats.

The Social Democrats follow with slight losses with 133 MPs. The liberal Renew group lost several seats, but according to forecasts would remain third with 82 seats ahead of the national conservative European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR). The ECR, which includes Fratelli d’Italia – the party of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni – has 70 seats.

The Identity and Democracy (ID) group, which is even further to the right and includes Marine Le Pen’s “Rassemblement National” and the FPÖ, is forecast to have 60 MPs (and will therefore gain more than the ECR). Together, the two far-right groups would then have 130 MPs.

A large group of 100 representatives currently consists of the (still) non-factional MPs, many of whom belong to the right wing – for example, the AfD MPs who were recently excluded from the ID, or the MPs of the Fidesz party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The Green Party has lost many seats in the EU Parliament: it fell from 72 to 53.
