So far, Upper Austria has gotten off lightly at the start of the storm season. The state and the emergency services are well prepared, but not every fire service operation was absolutely necessary, says Michael Hammer, President of the Upper Austrian Civil Protection Association. “If preparations are made in good time, people are prepared for extreme weather events.”

More than a hundred fire brigades were deployed in Upper Austria last weekend – mostly due to flooding. “If those affected had had a few sandbags at home, that would have been a great help. Sandbags can be used to quickly build barriers to seal off the house in the event of flooding. And these bags can be stored very space-efficiently,” says Hammer.
