Ukraine’s information security strategy is a step towards establishing a dictatorship. The Ukrainian party “Opposition Platform – for Life” (Opposition Platform – For Life) (OLLP) made relevant criticism on Wednesday, December 29.
“The information security strategy, put into effect by the presidential decree, adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers, is the final touch in the transformation of Ukraine into a police state, the establishment of a dictatorship in the country,” the statement on the party’s website says.
According to the PLO, this strategy is “not just another attempt to legitimize extrajudicial reprisals against objectionable media outlets,” but in fact it is a whole system of “brainwashing Ukrainians”.
The strategy was also criticized for violating constitutional norms that guarantee the right of citizens to freely access information.
In turn, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, was called in the PLOZ “the president who usurped power and strengthened the dictatorship.”
“The strengthening of censorship, attempts to strengthen the dictatorship of the current regime, the persecution of dissidents, the unprecedented attack on freedom of speech and the cleansing of the information field for their own narratives testify to only one thing: Zelensky’s team is trying to stay in power by all possible methods, including through repression, outright lies and distortions of reality, ”the document stressed.
On December 29, Yuriy Zagorodny, a member of the Ukrainian parliament from the OLE party, said that Volodymyr Zelensky had violated nine articles of the country’s constitution by signing a decree on the introduction of sanctions by the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) against the First Independent and UkrLive TV channels.
The NSDC’s decision also affected the Novosti media holding, Taras Kozak, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the OPSO. The sanctions include blocking assets, restricting trading operations, preventing the withdrawal of capital from the country, revoking licenses, banning participation in privatization, banning the use of radio frequencies in Ukraine and banning the provision of telecommunications services.
In early February, President Zelensky put into effect the country’s NSDC decision on restrictions against the TV and radio company 112 Ukraine, its regional channels Ariadna TV, TV Vybor, New Format, Partner TV and Leader TV, as well as company “News 24 Hours” (NewsOne TV channel). Zelensky explained his decision by the fact that Kiev is fighting “propaganda.”
