“If you have menopausal symptoms, you don’t always have to do a hormone test straight away,” says gynecologist Sebastian Jülg, head of gynecology and obstetrics at Freistadt Hospital, in the new podcast episode of “healthy & happy.” It is important to clarify other issues first, such as an underactive or overactive thyroid.
The average age for menopause, the last menstrual period for a woman, is 51 in Europe. The menopause itself begins as early as 35, and the first symptoms usually appear at the age of 45. “The symptoms are very unspecific, from thin hair and nails to dry mucous membranes and reduced libido to hot flushes or sleep disorders. The classic symptom is that the cycle becomes irregular,” says Jülg.
Hormone replacement, yes or no?
“Many women expect that taking hormones will solve all their problems. That is not realistic. You have to find out exactly which symptoms are the most bothersome and which of them can be alleviated by hormones,” says the expert. Before starting hormone therapy, the risks of thrombosis, heart attacks and breast cancer must also be clarified. “But there is no need to be afraid of hormone replacement therapy,” he says.
