Pensioner made jam sandwiches for burglars

It couldn’t be more brazen. A 26-year-old woman who was out on a thieving spree with her eight-year-old son shamelessly took advantage of the good nature of an elderly woman, but didn’t make much of a haul. According to the police, the Romanian woman and her boy entered a single-family home in Piberbach (Linz-Land district) through the unlocked front door on Wednesday around lunchtime. They met the owners in the hallway. The pensioner had been in the basement and was alerted to the intruders by noises.

Thieves invited into the kitchen

The duo then presented a well-rehearsed ploy: the 26-year-old immediately engaged the woman in conversation and asked her for work, the eight-year-old began to moan and said he was very hungry. The elderly woman plucked up the courage and invited the mother-son duo into her kitchen. While she was making a jam sandwich for the boy, the Romanian woman asked if she could use the toilet for a moment. The pensioner became suspicious because she did not hear the toilet flush even after a long time and went to check. Instead of on the toilet, she found the woman in the bedroom, a drawer of the bedside table was open. The lady immediately threw the uninvited guests out of the house.

Shortly afterwards, the victim reported the incident to the police because a piece of costume jewelry appeared to be missing. Police arrested the mother and her son that same afternoon during a manhunt that was immediately initiated. When confronted, the elderly woman recognized the duo, but the 26-year-old did not confess. After consultation with the public prosecutor’s office in Linz, the victim was released, the police announced on Wednesday evening.
