Five police patrols searched for hours on Wednesday afternoon in Bad Ischl (Gmunden district) for a local woman. Relatives reported her missing at around 1:45 p.m. because the 48-year-old had not returned home. It was around 4 p.m. when the missing woman contacted a friend with a desperate cry for help: she had slipped in the Rettenbach Gorge and fallen into the stream, could no longer move and urgently needed help.

Rescued with scoop stretcher

The police patrol searched the gorge and found the 48-year-old in the water on the banks of the Rettenbach a good 50 minutes later. She is believed to have fallen about ten meters down the 50-degree slope.

An emergency doctor treated the injured woman on site before she was rescued from the impassable terrain using a scoop stretcher by emergency personnel from the Gmunden Alpine Police with the support of the whitewater rescue service and paramedics from the Bad Ischl Red Cross. The woman sustained such serious injuries in the fall that she had to be taken to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Bad Ischl.
