Squirrel caused power outage in Wels

A squirrel cut off the power supply.

Nothing worked anymore, the cash register in the supermarket, the computers in the offices. Even the Steinhaus and Noitzmühle tunnels on the A8 motorway had to be closed because of the power outage and traffic had to be diverted. The power was out in Wels-West for 40 minutes around lunchtime today.

According to the Wels Strom company, a squirrel caused a short circuit in the 110 kV switchgear in the Lichtenegg substation. “Unfortunately, the subsequent startup of a 110 kV switchgear does not happen from one minute to the next,” says press spokesman Thomas Holl. However, such a short circuit caused by an animal is very rare, perhaps once in ten years or even less frequent.

Unfortunately, the trip to the substation did not end well for the cute squirrel; it died.
