An Israeli with two wombs had twins

The Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv announced on Thursday that one child grew in each uterus. The twins would have “met” for the first time after the birth. The woman was reportedly born with the malformation uterus didelphys (two separate uterus and two uterine necks). In the specific case, a uterus is also divided in the middle.

Extremely rare constellation

A twin pregnancy is extremely rare under these circumstances. This particular constellation happens with a probability of about one in a million. The 31-year-old woman was closely monitored during the high-risk pregnancy, and the twins were born by caesarean section in the 35th week.

“Doctor almost passed out”

According to the clinic, the mother said that she first learned of her special medical condition when she was 20 years old. Long before the pregnancy, she was afraid “that the baby would grow in the right, smaller uterus”. But then everything turned out differently: “During the first pregnancy examination the doctor almost passed out. It took him ten minutes to tell me that I have an embryo in every uterus.”

The pregnancy was accompanied by great worries, said the mother. But: “The twins – a boy and a girl – are cute and great, and I am sure they will be the best siblings and friends even though they have only just met.”
