That is why experts are once again issuing a strong warning: such accidents are preventable. Just a few moments of inattention can have serious consequences. And: insect screens are not suitable protection – children who falsely feel safe because of the screens often fall out of open windows.

“The most accident-prone months are still ahead”

“The months with the most accidents are still to come. 60 percent of children who fall out of windows occur between May and August,” said Johanna Trauner-Karner from the Road Safety Board on Thursday. Even though they happen comparatively less frequently than other accidents involving children, they have the most serious consequences. They range from bruises and broken bones to life-threatening injuries to the head, spine and internal organs. Toddlers between the ages of two and four must never be left alone near open windows, says the expert.
