Russian President Vladimir Putin has ratified an agreement with Tajikistan to create a unified regional air defense system. This is reported in the federal law № 451, published on Thursday, December 30, on the official Internet portal of legal information.
“To ratify the agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan on the creation of the Joint Regional Air Defense System of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan, signed in the city of Dushanbe on April 27, 2021,” the document says.
The treaty envisages the creation of a unified air defense system to increase the effectiveness of air defense in the region. The project is part of the joint air defense system of the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the creation of this system in April. He stressed that the program is designed to improve the reliability of the protection of the state border in the airspace.
In May, the Russian government approved a project to create this air defense system. The draft agreement specified that the parties would set aside a separate collective security area. The coordination of joint actions of the troops will be carried out by the Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Armed Forces.
The unified air defense system of the CIS was created more than 26 years ago, on February 10, 1995, with the participation of 10 countries of the commonwealth. Today, seven states participate in the system – Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
