The Ukrainian court opened a case on the claim of Yanukovych on the illegality of his removal from power

The Kiev District Administrative Court opened a case on the claim of ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych against the Verkhovna Rada, in which he challenged the removal from office of the head of state in 2014. This was announced on Thursday, December 30, by the representative of the parliament in the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Olga Sovgirya.

“The District Administrative Court of Kiev opened proceedings on the claim of V.F. Yanukovych. to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in a dispute over the recognition of the fact of his self-removal from the exercise of the constitutional powers of the President of Ukraine, “Sovgirya wrote on Facebook.

She clarified that the consideration of the case “with the summons of the parties” is scheduled for 10:15 am (11:15 am Moscow time) on February 16, 2022.

On February 20, 2014, a shooting occurred on the Maidan in Kiev, during which 53 people were killed. The Ukrainian authorities blamed the incident on the then head of the country, Viktor Yanukovych. After the coup d’etat in February 2014, the politician, fearing for his life, left the country. He was granted temporary asylum in Russia.

The new authorities accused him of abuse of power, treason, as well as organizing violent crimes against participants in mass protests in 2014.

Yanukovych was sentenced in absentia to 13 years in prison. The politician himself does not admit his guilt. His lawyers have filed appeals against the verdict.

However, on December 6, 2021, the Supreme Court of Ukraine upheld the verdict on Yanukovych in this case. The ex-president’s defense, in turn, announced their intention to apply to the ECHR.

On November 17, 2021, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Irina Venediktova said that Yanukovych and a number of former high-ranking officials could be punished with life imprisonment in the case of organizing the shooting on the Maidan in 2014. According to Venediktova, Yanukovych is the main suspect in the case.

At the same time, on January 28, 2021, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) of Ukraine charged Yanukovych with high treason in connection with the signing of the so-called Kharkiv agreements with Russia in 2010. According to the investigation, the agreements signed in Kharkiv on the conditions for the presence of the Russian Black Sea Fleet damaged the sovereignty and territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine.
