Agustín Iturralde, the campaign coordinator of the main candidate of the National Party, Álvaro Delgadodeveloped the main points of the “second floor of transformations” that constitutes the government program of the former Secretary of the Presidency, a set of proposals that seeks to continue and improve the policies implemented by the current administration of Luis Lacalle Pouand which is based on taking a “jump in competitiveness.”
There are 16 days left until the internal elections in Uruguay, and Slim leads by a good margin the polls within the National Party, affirming himself as the “heir” of the current government. A post taken by him when he speaks of the “second floor of transformations”, whose objective is to transform the country into the first developed in Latin America.
This government program includes, among other things, a “competitiveness leap” —do not increase taxes, demonopolize fuels, reduce the number of public jobs—, a “infrastructure leap” —with the recovery of rail freight transport and the taking advantage of the development of the Central Railway— and a “coexistence leap” —creating a special group adopting the “anti-mafia model” used by the Italian government, aggravating sentences in certain cases of drug trafficking and homicides between criminal gangs, and the creation of a Ministry of Justice—; was coordinated by Iturralde, who is also the director of the Development Studies Center (CED).
A new stage, with new proposals
Iturralde explained some of the central points about the program in dialogue with Radio Carve. In an extensive interview, the economist pointed out that “the great differential that this program has, compared to others, is that it is comprehensive, “It tries to address all the important issues for the country, and it is concrete, it is not a declaration of good intentions,” he highlighted.
In his opinion—and as he has expressed on previous occasions—President Lacalle Pou has been doing a good job during his administration. AND Slim, Although it continues that task, it is “a new stage.” “Has new proposals, “That in some things it does mean continuing with what has been done, but that, in many others, they are new things, which are being done now because without the first floor they could not be done,” he noted.
One issue on which he placed special emphasis was the tax issue, one of the big themes that emerged during the electoral campaign. In this regard, Iturralde was emphatic in highlighting that the former Secretary of the Presidency is committed to not increasing the taxes, but this does not mean an irresponsible promise to lower them, as other candidates who make up the government coalition have done.
This point is fundamental within the competitiveness agenda proposed by Slim, which also points to the need for Uruguay to grow, to work so that companies can be more competitive, to sell more to the world, so that the country is cheaper both to produce and to live. To achieve this, it is key to “improve, sophisticate and strengthen economic institutions.”
Likewise, it is also related to the wellness agenda: “International experience shows, according to the countries to which one aspires that Uruguay It may seem that these countries have more social protection, but there is more social protection because there is more economic competitiveness, and since there is more economic competitiveness there can be social protection. It is a virtuous circle that must be fed,” explained the campaign coordinator.
The early childhood and the reduction of worrying Poverty indices In this age group they will also be a priority in an eventual government of the nationalist candidate, as Iturralde pointed out.
