the electoral court orders a revocation consultation

On December 18, the INE decided to postpone the process for the mandate revocation consultation – scheduled for April 10 – arguing lack of resources.

The electoral court said that the INE must “make adjustments to its budget” or, if applicable, request a budget expansion from the Ministry of Finance.

He added that the decision to suspend the consultation process “goes against the right of citizens to participate in the acts of preparation for this democratic exercise.”

Just on December 23, the Supreme Court of Mexico also ordered the INE to carry out the consultation to revoke the mandate.

López Obrador, who assumed power in December 2018, is promoting a consultation for the public to decide whether or not his term ends until 2024.

Although the president assures that it is a democratic exercise, his detractors point out that it is a political exercise with a view to strengthening his position in the middle of his government.

This Thursday, López Obrador applauded the decision of the electoral court.

“Yesterday’s resolution is very important because what is clear, and it is what should be spread more, known, shouted from the rooftops, is that there will be a consultation, that is yesterday’s resolution, that is the essence: it will to have consultation “, said the president during his usual morning press conference.

By law, for the electoral institute to carry out the consultation, the signature of 3% of the electoral roll is required, that is, some 2.7 million supporters.

However, the INE has warned of strong budget cuts decided by the presidency and the Legislature – which dominates López Obrador’s party – for 2022, which leaves few resources to carry out the consultation.

Since he was mayor of Mexico City (2000-2006), the leftist leader has promised to submit his mandate to popular opinion through consultations.

As mayor, he made a telephone consultation to half of his government about his permanence in office.

Already as president-elect, he decided to suspend the millionaire project of a new airport for Mexico City in a consultation harshly criticized by opponents due to numerous irregularities registered.
