As reported, the ANC – the party of the late freedom hero Nelson Mandela – slipped from 57.5 to 40.2 percent in the elections on May 29.
On Friday, the ANC agreed to work with the Democratic Alliance (DA), which came second with 21.2 percent. The Zulu party Inkatha (3.4 percent) is also expected to join the coalition.
This ensures that the current President Cyril Ramaphosa (ANC) can continue to hold office.
The DA is economically liberal and has governed successfully in the Western Cape state for decades, but is considered by many South Africans to be the “party of the whites” and has therefore encountered resistance from the ANC.
Zuma’s party in opposition
MK will not be part of the coalition – the party of former president and ex-ANC politician Jacob Zuma, who was forced out of office by Ramaphosa in 2017/18 due to massive corruption allegations. Nevertheless, MK received 14.6 percent in the most recent election.
The left-wing populist “Economic Freedom Fighters” (EFF), which had achieved 9.5 percent and (like the MK) advocated partly radical demands such as the expropriation of large landholdings without compensation, were also not included in the coalition.
