Climber in Salzkammergut hit by fist-sized stone

Several rope teams from Hallstatt had met in the Kreuzstein area in the late morning to improve their climbing technique and practice rope team routines. However, the accident occurred during training for one of these routines: At around 11:20 a.m., two stones, each at least the size of a fist, came loose during an abseiling maneuver on the abseiling slope. The young man from the Gmunden district was hit directly by one of them.

Despite wearing a protective helmet, the 22-year-old was injured in the rockfall. Members of the mountain rescue team alerted the emergency doctor via the rescue control center. The injured man and the other people involved were finally rescued directly from the Echernwand by helicopter using a variable rope. The 22-year-old had to be taken to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Bad Ischl.
